ENGL 4674, Major African American Writers, will sample chapters from landmark books by Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, and Malcolm X, as well as short stories by Toni Cade Bambara. Final weeks will explore recent work by Ta-Nehisi Coates, this year鈥檚 Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, Shreveport native Jericho Brown, and Colson Whitehead, one of only four double Pulitzer recipients for fiction.
鈥淭his course can shed light on social policy changes influenced by Black writers." says Arts, English, and Humanities Chair, Dr. Holly Wilson. 鈥淢inority oppression, protests, and soul searching have happened before, and great writers have dealt with it in ways that can help us understand similar events in 2020.鈥�
