The Health and Physical Education Certification-Only Alternative Path Grades K-12 provides a certification option for applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. The curriculum allows those interested in becoming health and physical education teachers and/or coaches to fulfill state requirements for certification through a prescribed set of courses.

The curriculum allows those interested in becoming secondary (6-12) teachers to take prescribed courses to fulfill state requirements for certification.

Alt-Cert Secondary Clinical Practice Application
When program completers have met all of the above criteria and completed all requirements, they are proposed to the Louisiana State Department of Education for certification to teach grades 6-12 in the content area.
The Certification-Only Program Alternative Path Elementary Education is intended to allow potential applicants with a non-teacher education baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university to earn their certification in elementary education. The curriculum allows those interested in becoming elementary teachers (grades 1-5) to take prescribed courses to fulfill state requirements for certification.
be accepted to the university;
possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university and have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on all undergraduate coursework;
pass the following Core Academic Skills Praxis tests: Reading (5712), Writing (5722), and Mathematics (5732). The requirement is waived for those who possess an ACT composite score of 22+ or SAT score of 1030+ or who hold a master鈥檚 degree;
pass PRAXIS II-
Elementary Education Content Knowledge 5001 which is

complete the admissions application to the Department of Education;
demonstrate computer competency by passing a computer competency examination or successfully completing CMIS 1000;
complete background check with LSUA or parish in which observation and participation requirements will be met (if not employed as a teacher);
purchase professional liability insurance;
purchase LiveText;
complete confidentiality agreement;
complete entry disposition (if not employed as a teacher);
receive Department of Education faculty approval of completed application for entry into LSUA鈥檚 Certification-Only Alternate Path Program: Grades 1-5 Elementary Education.

Requirements for Residency (EDCI 4900)
Applications for student residency must be submitted to the Director of Clinical Practice no later than four weeks following the first day of classes in the semester prior to student teaching. Late applications cannot be guaranteed consideration. Before being officially admitted to residency or an internship, students must meet the following criteria:
possess a grade point average of at least 2.6 in all coursework required for certification;
pass PRAXIS II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (5622);
complete all coursework (with a grade of 鈥淐鈥� or higher in all professional courses) and complete requirements;
complete 2 days a week/50 FEX hours in field placement school;
complete ;
purchase professional liability insurance;
complete application for clinical practice;
complete resident teacher application if not working as a teacher (as required by the State of Louisiana Department of Education).

An add-on certificate allows someone with a valid teaching certificate to add additional areas of certification. Courses may be taken during the completion of a baccalaureate degree or an alternative certification program.

In addition to completion of the designated 18 hours, applicants for special education certification must have passed PRAXIS exam 0543. Completion of the requirements for special education add-on certification in either of the areas noted above will qualify the completer to receive the Louisiana Board of Regents Post Baccalaureate Certificate for Special Education, Mild-Moderate, with certification to teach in the designated grade levels.
